Why is Self-Esteem Important?
At True Balance Karate in Downers Grove, Illinois, we run a social-emotional learning program called True Character. I’m Master H, the owner and chief instructor here at the studio. With two master’s degrees in education, I helped design this curriculum to serve students of all ages—from our preschoolers to adults in their 80s.
This month, we’re focusing on self-esteem, which we define for our students by saying:
“I like myself and I feel good about my choices.”
Self-esteem is a combination of both confidence and decision-making. It’s knowing that you have strengths to share with the world and the ability to face challenges while also being proud of the positive choices you make.
Making Positive Choices Builds Self-Esteem
In class, we use real-life examples to show how choices shape confidence. Imagine you’re at the park and you see a kid being picked on. Instead of joining in, you invite them to play with you. That decision builds your self-esteem because you chose respect and kindness over peer pressure.
Or picture being at a soccer game where the ball gets kicked over a fence. A friend suggests taking it, but you know the right choice is to give it back so the players can continue. That simple act shows responsibility, integrity, and confidence in doing the right thing.
Confidence, Not Ego
Strong self-esteem isn’t about ego—it’s about respect, responsibility, and knowing your strengths. It’s choosing to engage with others in a positive way and believing in yourself when challenges arise.
Goal Setting and Resilience
At True Balance Karate, we connect self-esteem to goal setting. Whether it’s working toward the next belt rank, aiming for black belt, or completing chores with a black belt attitude at home, goals give us direction. Along the way, obstacles will come up. When our self-esteem is strong, we can face setbacks, ask for help, and keep pushing toward success.
That’s why self-esteem is so important—it gives us the confidence to make positive choices, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the belief that we can achieve the goals we set for ourselves.
See you on the mat!
True Balance Karate was founded in 2012 by Master Sue and Paul Helsdon.
We offer kids karate lessons for pre-school children ages 3-6 and elementary age kids ages 7 and up. These lessons are designed to develop the critical building blocks kids need — specialized for their age group — for school excellence and later success in life.
Our adult martial arts training is a complete adult fitness and conditioning program for adults who want to lose weight, get (and stay) in shape, or learn self-defense in a supportive environment.
