What is a Goal?

What is a goal?

Here at True Balance Karate in Downers Grove, Illinois, we have a social-emotional learning program called True Character. I’m Master H, the owner and chief instructor here at the studio. I have two master’s degrees in education, and we’ve developed this curriculum to meet the needs of our youngest student, who’s three or four, and our oldest student, who is 85.

Goal-Setting

This month, we’re talking about goal setting. It’s a very appropriate topic for the beginning of the year, a time for evaluation, planning, and deciding where we want to go and what we want to do. We reflect on the past year, celebrate our accomplishments, and look forward with hope and ideas.

Goals can be big or small. Younger kids often set goals that are immediate and achievable, like cleaning their room. These goals give them a sense of pride and are centered on instant rewards. Older students might aim for longer-term goals, such as getting into college or joining a sports team. Adults often set more extended goals, such as saving for a car or other significant milestones. Regardless of age, smaller goals—what we might call tasks—help build momentum toward larger ambitions.

For younger students, the focus is on identifying what they want to accomplish, planning how to achieve it, and following through. As students mature, they learn the importance of perseverance and overcoming challenges. High school students and adults set loftier goals, like working out regularly, but achieving these requires action plans, reminders, and motivation.

Moving Forwards

Goal setting begins with defining what you want to achieve, creating a plan, and working towards success. Whether it’s cleaning the house or reaching a monumental milestone, the process remains the same. As we discuss goal setting, we’ll explore S.M.A.R.T. goals, staying motivated, overcoming roadblocks, and more.

Essentially, goals are things we want to accomplish, whether short-term or long-term.

Thanks, and I’ll see you on the mat!

True Balance Karate was founded in 2012 by Master Sue and Paul Helsdon.
