Let’s find some opportunities to show kindness

Let’s find some opportunities to show kindness.

This month’s True Character word of the month is kindness. Kindness means showing care, concern and consideration for others without expecting anything in return.

Every month we have a word of the month and we’re talking about kindness for this month’s word of the month. This series of videos and blogs is meant to help parents teach these lessons at home. Help reinforce the things we’re teaching here in class.

100 Acts of Kindness

There are a lot of opportunities for showing some kindness.

First, I want to start out with a little bit of a challenge. Let’s have a challenge to do 100 acts of kindness.

That’s not as hard of a thing as it sounds. An act of kindness doesn’t have to be difficult. It doesn’t have to be hard. And it doesn’t have to cost any money. It doesn’t have to take any energy.

An act of kindness could be something as simple as a smile. An act of kindness could be something as simple as listening. Act of kindness could be something as simple as noticing somebody is there.

It could be making a comment on how you notice something someone’s wearing is nice, somebody’s new hair cut, or noticing somebody looks like they’re sad and giving them a little joke.

Showing You Care

An act of kindness is just showing others that you care and you care about them, you care how they feel.

And you’re not looking for anything in return. You’re not giving them a smile or cheering them up so you can get ice cream later. You’re doing it because you do actually care how they think and feel.

So, the challenge to everybody out here is to do 100 acts of kindness — little things. If you keep that in the top of your head, you’re going to realize you’re going to do more things than you thought you could. You’re going to find lots of opportunities around you to give acts of kindness.

Taking Care of Each Other

One thing we want to do in our 100 acts of kindness is take good care of each other.

When we take good care of our family, we’re going to give them hugs when they’re sad. We’re going to make them a card when they’re sick. We’re going to hold their hand when they’re scared.

We take good care of our friends. We’re going to play a game they want to play. We’re going to cheer them up when they’re upset. We’re going to listen when they need to vent and get something off their head.

All right, we’re gonna reach out to him. We haven’t seen him for a while, maybe because we’ve been locked in our houses in quarantine.

Taking Care of Pets and Animals

We take good care of our pets and our animals.

We’re gonna feed them, we’re gonna give them water. We’re gonna give them love, we’re gonna give them attention.

Pets and animals really help show us our kindness. They never ask for anything in return, they just give you unconditional love and you give them unconditional love back.

And by the way, if you show lots of kindness to your pets, they’re going to pay more attention to you. I know our dogs in our house come to the person that takes care of them the most.

They listen to the person that feeds them. They come up first to the person that takes them out and plays with them and that brings them on walks.

That shows those extra levels of kindness to them, and they reciprocate and show it right back at you.

Live Up To The Challenge

So, let’s live up to that challenge.

Let’s all work together try to get at least 100 acts of kindness out there — with everybody around us, everybody in our community, people in our family, our friends. Show acts of kindness for those people that are around you physically.

Show acts of kindness for people you haven’t seen in a long time. Like grandparents, aunts, and uncles that live out of town. Maybe somebody who’s in a hospital or a nursing home.

Make them a video, send them a card, reach out and show that little extra act of kindness showing that you’re thinking about them and that you care.

“The heart of a warrior is one made of gold,” I like to say. A lot of great martial artists are some of the nicest kindest people you’ve ever met.

That is the character of a traditional martial artist, the character of a noble warrior is one that’s more than willing to reach out and show kindness to everybody around them.

Thanks, have a great day and we’ll see you on the mat.
