No Carry Month
Partner in Parenting: No Carry Month – Building Independence One Bag at a Time
At True Balance Karate in Downers Grove, IL, we believe martial arts is more than kicks and punches—it’s about raising confident, independent kids. That’s why this month’s Partner in Parenting theme is “No Carry Month.”
The challenge is simple: Parents, don’t carry your kids’ things.
If your child is old enough to walk through the studio doors, they are old enough to carry their own bag. After all, future black belts are more than capable of managing their own gear.
Why “No Carry Month” Matters
It may seem small, but when parents carry everything for their children, it sends the wrong message. Instead of showing confidence in their abilities, it tells kids they can’t do it themselves.
When kids carry their own bags, they learn:
-
Responsibility – taking ownership of their belongings
-
Confidence – knowing they are strong enough to handle it
-
Independence – preparing for bigger challenges in life
At TBK, we see students come in to build strength and confidence, but then watch parents carry their uniforms, sparring gear, and water bottles back out to the car. Giving kids the opportunity to handle their own things is a small but powerful way to support their growth.
A Personal Story: Lessons From the Walk Home
When our own son started kindergarten, we set a rule: we don’t carry kids’ things. The first day, he threw a fit. A 10-minute walk home turned into 45 minutes of him throwing his backpack on the ground and demanding it be carried.
But the very next day, something changed. He walked proudly into school, carrying his own bag—with a smile on his face. That little step built pride and independence that carried into other areas of his life.
Don’t Run an “All-Inclusive Resort” at Home
Think about an all-inclusive vacation. A weekend feels amazing. A week is relaxing. But what if you lived there for months? You’d start to lose skills, initiative, and confidence.
Some parents unintentionally create that same environment at home—doing everything for their kids. When we stop carrying for them and let them try, we remind them they are capable and strong.
Your Parenting Challenge
This month, let your child carry their own things—to class, to school, wherever they go. Encourage them to feel proud of their independence. We’d love to hear your stories and see your pictures of kids carrying their gear with confidence!
