How We Build Self-Esteem

At True Balance Karate in Downers Grove, Illinois, we run a social-emotional learning program called True Character. I’m Master H, the owner and chief instructor here at the studio. With two master’s degrees in education, I helped design this program to meet the needs of students of all ages, from preschoolers to adults in their 80s.

This month, we’re talking about self-esteem, which we define for our youngest students with the phrase:
“I like myself and I feel good about my choices.”

We’ve already explored what self-esteem means and why it’s important. It helps us set and achieve goals, overcome difficult moments, and make the right choices—whether that’s standing up for a friend or pushing through a challenge. But the big question is: how do we build it?

Focus on What You Can Do

One of the simplest ways to build self-esteem is to shift your mindset. Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” focus on what you can do. Maybe you can’t fly a plane (yet!), but you can ride a bike, play a sport, or master a karate form. Recognizing your abilities strengthens your confidence and keeps your outlook positive.

Write It Down

Another powerful tool is journaling. Try writing down the good things that happened during the day, the positive choices you made, or accomplishments you’re proud of. You could even write them on sticky notes and drop them into a jar. Over time, the growing stack of notes becomes a visual reminder of your progress, helping you see just how much good you’re putting into the world.

Ask for Help When You Need It

Building self-esteem doesn’t mean doing everything alone. When you struggle or hit a roadblock, ask for help. In class, when students get stuck on a form, I point out what they already know and where they need more practice. That reminder—that they’ve already mastered much of the work—helps them realize how capable they are. The same applies in life: where you get stuck is just where you need support, not a reflection of your worth.

Recognize Your Strengths

At the core, growing self-esteem means recognizing your strengths, passions, and positive actions. When you keep track of your progress and remind yourself of what you already can do, your confidence grows naturally.

By focusing on positivity, celebrating accomplishments, and seeking guidance when needed, anyone can grow their self-esteem.

We offer kids karate lessons for pre-school children ages 3-6 and elementary age kids ages 7 and up. These lessons are designed to develop the critical building blocks kids need — specialized for their age group — for school excellence and later success in life.

Our adult martial arts training is a complete adult fitness and conditioning program for adults who want to lose weight, get (and stay) in shape, or learn self-defense in a supportive environment.
