Jacob’s Black Belt Journey

Every Black belt has a story to tell, and every story can inspire others to achieve their best. Here is Jacob’s story;

Master Helsdon:

All right. We just got promoted to black belt today. What brought you guys in The first place

Jacob:

We were driving past this place and I was like, “Hey, can I do karate?” And my parents said, sure, and brought me in,

Master Helsdon:

Okay. What were you guys looking for him to gain?

Mom:

I think we were looking for him to find a place to find community and to gain some self-confidence and some self-discipline.

Master Helsdon:

Excellent.

Dad:

Something physical, activity-related. Other sports, he hadn’t really enjoyed, so we were trying a lot of things. And once he started here, he really enjoyed it.

Master Helsdon:

Awesome. And what have we found?

Mom:

Exactly that. Right? He’s become much more self-confident. He’s able to speak in front of groups, which he never could do before. A little bit shy and he’s come out of his shell. Physically, the sport aspect of it, he’s really come, really long sway, a really long way with his cardiovascular health and all that, so it’s been really great.

Master Helsdon:

Excellent. Tell us about a time that you struggled and how you pushed through to keep going.

Jacob:

Zoom.

Master Helsdon:

Yeah.

Jacob:

From brown belt to a red belt, I felt like quitting because I just wasn’t getting the community aspect of it, of being with people and just being in my basement and I was just like, where’s the people? Where’s the energy? I don’t have it.

Mom:

Remember when you were a little dragon, you tried to figure out how to turn for the first form?

Jacob:

Yeah. That was awesome it happened.

Master Helsdon:

How do you feel that you pushed your way through?

Jacob:

I feel better now.

Master Helsdon:

You feel better now.

Jacob:

I genuinely enjoy this

Master Helsdon:

Excellent. And you’re proud to earn your black belt today?

Jacob:

Yep. Very.

Master Helsdon:

All right, great, guys. Thanks.
